A level switch is a sensor that can detect the presence of liquid, powder or granular materials at a given point. It is usually used to prevent overflows and is placed at the top of the tank. When the liquid comes into contact with the level switch, it sends a signal to prevent overflow. Similarly, the level switch is activated when the liquid level drops so that the tank is not completely empty.

While a level switch only detects the presence of material at a specific point, a level sensor usually gives the total volume of liquid in a tank. This reading is usually given as a current between 4 and 20 mA.
