We successfully completed and commissioned the Altınözü District Drinking-Water SCADA and Remote Monitoring System we designed for the Hatay Water and Sewerage Administration (HATSU). The wells, reservoirs and pumping stations spread across Altınözü are now monitored and managed in real time, from a single centre, on a single screen.
Technology Infrastructure: Sofrel
For this project, the French LACROIX Sofrel product family — a worldwide reference with its solutions dedicated to the water and wastewater sector — was chosen. Sofrel RTU/PLC units were used at every station in the field, and Sofrel SCADA software at the centre. There are concrete reasons behind this choice:
- Sofrel RTUs are designed specifically for the water sector; with ready-made function blocks dedicated to well, reservoir and pumping-station applications, commissioning time is shortened considerably.
- They keep running on an internal battery during power outages; even if communication is lost they store data in local memory and transfer it to the centre in full when the connection returns. No measurement is lost.
- With GSM/GPRS and IP-based communication, even rural points without wired infrastructure are connected to the centre.
- Sofrel SCADA software is fully web-based; authorized staff access the system through a browser with no additional installation. Station-based data points, mimic diagrams, reports, trend graphs and the maintenance module are gathered in a single interface.
- Alarm management, reporting and user-authorization functions are a native part of the software; no additional module or license is required.
System Scope
The district's entire water-supply chain was integrated into the SCADA:
- 13 deep wells: Fatıklı Kuyu 1-2, Hanyolu Kuyu 1-2-3-4, Hacıpaşa Kuyu 1-2-3, Karsu Kuyu-2, Yeni Şehir Kuyu 1-2
- 6 reservoirs: Sarılar Depo, Fatıklı Depo-2, Hanyolu Depo, Yeni Şehir Depo and Depo-2
- Pumping stations: Fatıklı and Yeni Şehir pumping stations
- Critical-zone pressure measurement points: network pressure tracking with Sofrel LS42 dataloggers
All of these points were visualized on a live diagram page over the district's isometric map, together with the flow directions of water from well to reservoir and from reservoir to network. The operator sees the entire district at a glance.
What Is Monitored at Each Well?
On the visual screens prepared specifically for each well:
- Pump control: Auto/Manual selection, remote Start/Stop and target-reservoir (collection reservoir) assignment
- Well information: Well depth, pump installation depth, dynamic and static water level, pump power, reservoir min./max. operating levels
- Sensor data: Flow meter (instantaneous and total), line pressure, hydrostatic level sensor
- Energy analyzer: L1-L2-L3 phase voltages, phase currents and frequency; the electrical health of the pump is monitored 24/7
- Security: Door-opening and panel-cover sensors raise an instant alarm on unauthorized intervention
- Camera integration and generator-panel monitoring bring facility security and energy continuity onto one screen
The automatic switching of well pumps on and off according to reservoir level runs locally on the Sofrel RTU; even if the connection to the centre is lost, the reservoir does not overflow and the well does not run dry.
Critical-Zone Pressure Measurement
With battery-powered Sofrel LS42 dataloggers placed at critical points of the network, line pressure, battery status and ambient temperature are tracked remotely. These devices run on battery for years at points without mains power, send measurements to the centre at defined intervals and raise an instant alarm on threshold breaches. Both water leaks and pressure drops can thus be detected without going to the field. Maintenance teams now learn of a fault from the SCADA, not from a citizen.
Alarms, Reporting and Analysis
- Instant notification of non-acknowledged alarms, alarm history and operator-acknowledgment tracking
- Automatic reporting on a per-well and district-wide basis
- Trend graphs for flow, pressure, level and energy data
- Planned-maintenance tracking with the maintenance module
- Thanks to the web-based architecture, authorized staff can access it through a browser
